We bounced off ideas. Something to clamp onto the control surface like a clothespin was the thought. After some thought I suggested an adjustable jaw that could clamp onto the control surface. On top of this jaw would be a holder for the cell phone.
We were contacted by Dan from Boomerang RC Jets with a request for a simple, accurate way to use the built-in level on his iPhone to set control surface throws on his Boomerang Atom Squared. After brainstorming several concepts, we settled on a clamp-style design that attaches directly to the control surface. The final solution features an adjustable jaw that securely grips a wide range of control surface sizes, with a phone holder mounted on top.
Multiple design iterations were required to address the varying thicknesses, widths, and angles found on different aircraft. This led to the development of interchangeable jaw cushions in multiple thicknesses and angles for a precise, secure fit. Testing was conducted by Chris Gini on IMAC aircraft, which differ significantly from jets, resulting in further refinements to jaw clearance and cushioning. An additional mount was also added to support a digital level as an alternative to a smartphone. While carbon-filled PETG was initially considered, standard PETG ultimately proved more than adequate for strength and durability.
